It has a population of 14,098 according to the 2021 census. The name of the suburb reflects its position on the Yarra River, downstream from the neighboring suburb of Templestowe. The area is bounded by Rose Avenue, Russell Street, and Sheahans Road in the west, the Yarra River in the north, Ruffey Creek and Williamsons Road in the east, and Manningham Road in the south. Lower Templestowe is home to several schools, including Templestowe Secondary College, Templestowe Valley Primary School, Templestowe Heights Primary School, and St Kevin's Catholic primary school. The suburb has two parks, Birrarung Park and Finns Reserve, which offer walking tracks and access to the Yarra River for recreational activities such as swimming and rafting.
