Patterson Lakes

VIC 3197
Patterson Lakes is a canal-rich suburb located 35 km (22 mi) southeast of Melbourne's Central Business District, within the City of Kingston local government area. With a population of 7,793 as recorded in the 2021 census, Patterson Lakes offers a unique waterfront lifestyle. The suburb is built around the lower section of the Patterson River, making it a popular boating destination with the most popular boat launching facilities in Victoria. The canal system, known as the Tidal Canal, connects to Port Phillip Bay and features the Patterson Lakes Marina and its facilities. Historically, the area was a coastal wetland known as Carrum Carrum Swamp, inhabited by Indigenous Australians of the Bunurong language group. The swamp was drained in 1876 through the construction of Patterson Cut, enabling the development of the suburb. Today, Patterson Lakes offers a range of amenities and services, including shopping complexes like Lakeview Shopping Centre and Gladesville Shopping Centre, as well as various sports and hobby facilities. For education, Patterson Lakes is home to Patterson Lakes Primary School and Patterson River Secondary College. The suburb is accessible by the Carrum railway station, and major roads such as Nepean Highway, EastLink, and Peninsula Link provide easy connections to surrounding areas. Patterson Lakes has a temperate climate, typically cooler than Melbourne CBD, and offers walking and cycling trails, as well as parks and wetlands for outdoor recreation.
