Mulgrave is a suburb located 21 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, within the City of Monash local government area. It has a population of 19,889 according to the 2021 census. The suburb takes its name from Mulgrave Castle in North Yorkshire, England. The first settler in Mulgrave parish was Thomas Napier, a Scottish builder who arrived in the Colony of Victoria in the mid-1830s. Mulgrave has a rich history, with the shifting of its borders and the reduction of its size over time. In the present day, Mulgrave is known for its distinct areas, with parts of it renamed to Wheelers Hill in the late 1990s. Jacksons Road is a notable feature, running through the eastern part of the suburb and intersecting with the Monash Freeway. The Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre and the Village Green Hotel are popular spots in the area. Mulgrave also has various sporting clubs, including Australian Rules football teams, cricket clubs, and tennis clubs. The suburb is home to several schools, including Mazenod Secondary College and Mulgrave Primary School.
