Lalor is a suburb located 17 km north of Melbourne's Central Business District within the City of Whittlesea local government area. Named after Peter Lalor, a leader of the Eureka Stockade rebellion, Lalor has a rich history tied to its namesake. The suburb was initially a part of Thomastown but was developed as a low-cost housing scheme by the Peter Lalor Home Building Co-operative Society in the 1940s. Lalor recorded a population of 23,219 at the 2021 census, with a median age of 37. The diverse community includes a significant number of residents born in countries such as India, Italy, and Macedonia. Multiple languages are spoken at home, including Arabic, Macedonian, and Vietnamese. Lalor offers various educational options, including several primary and secondary schools, both public and Catholic.
