Kensington

VIC 3031
Kensington, Victoria is an inner-city suburb located 4 km north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District. With a population of 10,745 recorded in the 2021 census, Kensington is known for its village feel, diverse architecture, and charming cafes. The suburb features a mix of Victorian terraces, cottages, warehouse apartments, and new structures in the western part of the area. It is characterized by hilly sections and tree-lined streets. Kensington's history includes being home to an abattoir, livestock saleyards, and various factories. However, these operations ceased in the 1980s, leading to significant urban renewal and the development of Kensington Banks. The suburb was named after Kensington in London. Prior to European settlement, the Wurundjeri people, the traditional owners of the land, inhabited the area for thousands of years. Today, Kensington is a socially progressive and gentrified suburb with a diverse community. It has a large refugee population and a thriving LGBTQ+ community. The suburb is part of the City of Melbourne local government area and is represented in both state and federal elections. Kensington offers a range of amenities including parks, schools, places of worship, and convenient public transport options.
