Flemington is an inner-city suburb located 5 km north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District in Victoria, Australia. It is bordered by the Maribyrnong River and the Moonee Ponds Creek, and it includes the locality of Newmarket. The suburb has a rich history, with its name being derived from Flemington Estate in Scotland or from a Brunswick resident named Robert Fleming. Flemington is known for hosting the Melbourne Cup Thoroughbred horse race since 1861 at Flemington Racecourse. Flemington and neighboring Kensington feature a mix of weatherboard cottages, attached brick single-storey and some double-storey terrace houses, and Victorian, Boom, Edwardian, and Federation style homes. The area experienced further development during the Victorian Goldrush in the 1850s, and residential development intensified in the 1880s. Flemington has a population of 7,025 as per the 2021 census, with a median age of 34. The suburb offers various amenities and services, including three kindergartens, three primary schools, a secondary college, and a special needs school. There are also twelve parks, reserves, and ovals for recreational activities. Flemington has good public transport connectivity with two railway stations, Newmarket and Flemington Bridge, and tram routes 57 and 59 that provide easy access to the city. The main arterial road, Racecourse Road, connects to the Princes Highway, and the CityLink tollway runs along the suburb's eastern boundary.
