Docklands

VIC 3008
Docklands, also known as Melbourne Docklands, is a waterfront suburb located 2 km west of Melbourne's Central Business District. It is situated on the banks of the Yarra River and is bounded by Spencer Street, Wurundjeri Way, and Montague Street to the east, the Yarra River and Moonee Ponds Creek to the west, Footscray Road and Dynon Road to the north, and Lorimer Street, Boundary Road, and the West Gate Freeway to the south. Once a bustling dock area, Docklands fell into disuse and was virtually abandoned by the 1990s. However, with the construction of Docklands Stadium in the late 1990s, urban renewal began, leading to an apartment boom and the establishment of business headquarters in the area. Today, Docklands is known for its contemporary architecture, heritage buildings, and landmarks such as Docklands Stadium, Southern Cross Station, and the Melbourne Star Observation wheel. Despite its development, Docklands has received mixed public opinion. Some praise its modern design, while others criticize its lack of green open spaces, pedestrian activity, transport links, and culture. The area has a range of amenities and services, including shopping centers like The District Docklands, entertainment venues like Marvel Stadium, and a variety of dining options. The 2021 census recorded a population of 15,495 in Docklands, with a median age of 32.
