It has a population of 23,252 according to the 2021 census. The suburb is named after Brighton in England and has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. Originally part of Dendy's Special Survey, Brighton attracted wealthy residents in the late 1840s who were drawn to the generous building sites and the prospect of sea bathing. Stately homes were built along 'The Terrace', now known as the Esplanade, overlooking Dendy Street Beach.
