Are you thinking of embarking on a career in Real Estate Sales or Property Management? Perhaps it’s something you have been considering for a while? Like many of us, you are probably obsessed with Melbourne’s property market. Do you keep a constant eye on local sales results? Do you attend Open for Inspections or Auctions, just to see how properties are presented and marketed? Perhaps you’ve had a recent dealing with a Sales Agent or Property Manager and have thought, ‘I could do that’.

A career in Real Estate can be extremely challenging, highly competitive, and also incredibly rewarding. It’s important to have the right personality type and innate skillset to be successful. Most Agency directors are looking for new team members who can display the following attributes:

In order to work as a Real Estate agent in Victoria, you must be at least 18 years old and have completed year 12 or equivalent. Before working under a licensed real estate agent and gaining practical experience, you need to complete your Agents Representative Course through an accredited provider, e.g., the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV). Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice can be provided either online or in-person and is a compulsory course that covers topics such as sales techniques, auctioneering, property valuations, real estate law, property management, business broking, and agency operations.
New Agents also need to register with Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV). Once you have completed your Agents Representative Course and have gained the aggregate of at least one-year full-time experiences as an agent’s representative in Victoria, you can be registered as a Licensed Real Estate Agent with CAV.

Where do you want to work? Who do you want to work with? Is there a particular Agency or Agent that you feel you will be a good fit? Most experienced agents agree that the best approach is to contact them directly. Even if the company isn’t actively recruiting, if you can show initiative, confidence, drive and determination, chances are you’ll be taken on. Many real estate agents start their careers by working in property management, as sales or marketing assistants, or shadow experienced real estate agents as licenced estate agent consultants. This is a great way to learn the ropes of the industry and develop your skillset.
So, you’ve completed your qualifications and got yourself a job. Now how do you begin to make a name for yourself in this highly competitive industry?
It is important to build a strong network of contacts and relationships with real estate professionals, clients, and other industry leaders. This can be done through attending real estate events, being active on social media, and networking.

Agents benefit from actively promoting their services through personal marketing and self-promotion on social media. This will help potential clients learn about you, your point-of-difference in the market, and what you can offer them.
Providing consistent and excellent customer service will make your clients happy and more likely to recommend you to their friends and family.
